Out with the New, In with the Old

Although we knew better, my wife and I bought an inexpensive, prefabricated steel and canvas gazebo for our back patio area. It worked well initially but only lasted 4 years and out it went to the curb. Transforming from Architect to Contractor, and working with some talented artisans, I built a permanent structure where we could use materials that were old, salvaged, renewable and contained recycled content.
Tube Steel columns and angle iron to support the structure are about 95% recycled content. The decorative concrete columns were locally made, abandoned under some old hackberry trees, and rescued for use. All the cedar timbers/decking, although not locally grown forest products, are a renewable resource, and, the clay tile roof is made up of 70 year old, discontinued Ludowici flat and barrel tiles, salvaged from a local demolition project and donated by City Roofing of Fort Worth.
